What a privilege it is to live in an area rich with fascinating places to visit, most within an hour’s scenic car tour of the Cotswolds. Here are a few of my favourites:
Stonehenge
One of my all-time favourites. Built 5,000 years ago, for reasons we are still trying to understand, Stonehenge is a World Heritage Site. It has an award winning visitor centre. Stand in awe and wonder how our ancient ancestors built this marvel and why.
Blenheim Palace
Magnificent Blenheim Palace is another World Heritage Site. Queen Anne gifted the palace to the Duke of Marlborough in 1722 to show her gratitude. It is famous as being the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Firstly, walk in the footsteps of history as you explore the beautiful state rooms and the Churchill Exhibition. After admire the scale and grandeur of the formal gardens and Capability Brown’s landscaped grounds.
Waddesdon Manor
The National Trust own this stunning French Renaissance style chateau and the Rothschild Foundation manage it. Built by Baron Ferdinand Rothschild for entertaining his friends. The manor also showcases his families vast collection of furniture, paintings, and works of art in the most lavish room settings imaginable. If you only visit one ‘stately home’ this is the one.
Highclere (Downton Abbey)
This beautifully proportioned house was the setting for Downton Abbey. Fans will instantly recognise the rooms from the TV series. Less well known but well worth exploring are the stunning gardens and borders to the rear of the property.
Oxford
Oxford is world renowned for its prestigious university. It was established as far back as 1096, the architecture of its 39 colleges led the Victorian poet Matthew Arnold to name it the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’. With its mix of ancient and modern there is much to see and do including Punting on the Thames, the Botanic Garden, Museum of the History of Science and the Pitts Rivers Museum.
Bath
Stunning honey coloured Georgian architecture marks Bath as a unique city. One of the highlights include the Royal Crescent (used for the hit series Bridgerton). Furthermore, the majestic Circus and of course the famous Roman Baths is definitely worth a visit. The city’s compact visitor friendly centre boasts numerous places to eat and drink, fine independent shops and the modern Thermae Bath Spa.
Stratford-upon-Avon
The 16th century birthplace of William Shakespeare, the most famous playwright in the English language. You can visit the house where he was born and grew up. During which you can discover much about his life in his early years. Home to The Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford is a unique blend of old wooden Elizabethan buildings and the new.
Westonbirt Arboretum
Home of our National Arboretum, the finest collection of trees and shrubs in Europe is spread over 600 acres of Cotswold countryside. Dependent on the time of year enjoy the first flush of spring, summer’s full leaved glory or the russet reds and shimmering gold of autumn.
